Grid Art Animal (15 points)

Learning Objective: I can experiment with the creative process by drawing within a grid. I will learn about scale in drawing and how the grid can really help an artist with precision.

Steps for this assignment:

Watch the following video about how to create a grid drawing!

Step 1: Choose a picture of an animal that you want to draw, it must be drawn from a photograph of a real living animal, not a cartoon or a photo of someone's drawing.

Step 2: Review the grid drawing video to use the steps of creating a grid for your reference and your drawing.

Step 3: Take your ruler, and draw LIGHTLY a 1-inch by 1-inch grid on the printed image you chose to draw. Please print this image to be at least 5x5 inches.  It can be larger than this but not smaller.

Step 4: Take a piece of drawing paper or computer paper, and draw out the exact same 1-inch by 1-inch grid that matches the image that you chose. As the video shows, focus on drawing each box and not drawing the whole picture. Label each square to help you not to get confused on which section (square) you are working on. Also, I suggest you cover up squares you are not working on by cutting a 1-inch by 1-inch hole in a sheet of paper to put on your reference photo. This will eliminate all confusion on what you're drawing.

Step 5: Shade in all light and dark values.  This drawing should not just be a line drawing.

Step 6: Submit your artwork. As the student examples show below, you must submit both the printed image and the drawing that you created in your digital portfolio.

To turn in this assignment:

  1. Photograph your artwork in good light.
  2. Insert the photo into your digital portfolio and label it.
  3. Return to this assignment page and click Add Submission
  4. Paste the link to your digital portfolio into the Online Text box
