Make a Model of DNA (50 points)

Instructions:

Before building your Model you will need to WATCH: DNA Structure video and READ: DNA Structure.  To get full credit, you must complete all 5 steps below.

• Step 1: Decide what materials you will need for your model.  You should have two different things/colors for the sugars and phosphates, and four for the base pairs, and something for the hydrogen bonds.

• Step 2: Make your structure is at least 8 base-pairs long.  The strands should be anti-parallel.  The bases should have the correct number of hydrogen bonds between them.

• Step 3: Fix the model in such a way that it twists to make the double helix shape.

• Step 4: Make a key to your model.  Make sure it says what stands for each of the components, including bonds. You can make a key using google docs or else hand write it.

• Step 5: Take a picture of your model with your face in the picture. I am requiring you to be pictured with your model so I know that you did not take a photo of a DNA model off the internet.

I do not expect this to be an expensive project, so use what you have. You can use pasta (uncooked), jelly beans, gumdrops, toothpicks, Legos, pipe cleaners, straws, and a variety of beads.  So be creative with this model!  Do not buy a model kit!  Have fun!!

If you are having trouble coming up with ideas for your model, chat or email me and I will try and help you get started.
