Instructions:

For this assignment you will design experiments to test how temperature, surface area, and stirring affect the rate of dissolving. You will need to turn in a lab report to get credit. Your report should include the following items:

  • Your hypothesis of what you expect to happen in each experiment.
  • A description of how you set up each experiment.
  • The data collected from each of the 3 experiments (temperature, stirring, surface area).
  • Pictures of your setup and results.
  • An explanation of your results.

Some tips for getting started are included below:

  • Choose a solute to dissolve in water. Some good ideas you may have around the house would be salt, sugar, alka seltzer tablets, bouillon cubes, food coloring, etc.
  • Set up your experiments. Use the thermometer from your science kit to record the temperature of the water. Use a watch or a timer to record how long your solute takes to dissolve.
  • Make sure you only change one variable at a time in your experiments.
  • Make sure you organize and record your data. You can create your lab report in a Google docs, Google slides, or any other way that you feel would work best.
