1.2 ASSIGNMENT: Sustainable Development (Due March 23)
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (25 points)
A topic that is generating a great deal of discussion these days is sustainable development. As we learned this week, while the Green Revolution brought great advancements in agricultural productivity, it also brought some negative consequences to our environment including alterations to natural landscapes and waterways, increased pollution, and accelerated soil erosion and wasted water. Sustainable development tries to find possible solutions to the problems caused by population growth and industrialization.
The goals of sustainable development are to:
Help people out of poverty
Protect the environment (i.e. reduce or eliminate pollution)
Use resources in an environmentally sound way, no faster than the rate at which they are regenerated (i.e. conserve water or soil resources)
There have been many advances in sustainable development that address the issues resulting from increasing population and industrialization. Many technologies and strategies have been developed to address the ecological issues we are studying this week for soil and water resources. Some examples include no-till farming, dry farming, terraced farming, drip irrigation, rain gardens, water rationing, reclaimed water and many more!
In this assignment you will use the resources from this week's lessons AND conduct research to create a presentation about sustainable development.

Do's and Don'ts page
For your assignment:
Pick one area to focus your research on from the topics we are learning about: either soil or water resources.
Create a Google Slides presentation that discusses 2 different technologies/strategies aimed at sustainable development in that area.
For EACH of your two technologies/strategies, you need to answer the following 3 questions:
● How does the technology or strategy help protect the environment?
● How does the technology or strategy help with poverty?
● How does the technology or strategy use resources in an environmentally sound way?
Include at least 3 different credible sources; do not use wikipedia or ask.com
Include at least 2 relevant photos that enhance your technologies/strategies. Include citations.

Go to your Google Drive and then click New>Slides in the left hand corner. This will open a new document in Google Slides

Type/Complete your assignment, following the instructions above

When you are finished click Share in the right hand corner

Click Advanced and then Under Who Has Access click Change

Choose People at Mountain Heights Academy who have the link can view

Choose from the drop down access field: Allow anyone at Mountain Heights Academy to Comment and then click Save. (Checking this box allows your instructor to write comments on your assignment)

Copy the Link to the document (the top field of the Sharing Settings window)

To submit your assignment, in Moodle click Add Submission

Paste the link to your Google Doc in the box
