Instructions

The following is an excerpt from an actual student essay which has many problems with point of view. Rewrite the seven numbered sentences below so that they have consistent, third person plural point of view. Eliminate all first person (I, me), second person (you, your), and third person singular (one). Use plural subjects (students, people, teachers, etc.) and the third person plural pronoun (they). In many cases you will need to reword sentences so that they make sense—it is not always possible to simply replace pronouns. Make sure your revisions sound natural and demonstrate a good writing style.

Student Paragraph:

Organization is one of the most essential attributes of a successful student. (1) Knowing what all of your assignments are and when they are all due is key to success in college. (2) Students must be able to keep everything in place so that you always know where to find things; this makes for an easier time when completing assignments and tests by their due dates. Another key component to success is to stick to a routine. (3) Having your schedule set will help in many ways. (4) First, it will ensure every task you need to complete has been scheduled for a specific time and place, so that nothing will be overlooked. (5) Having a routine also helps me know when my assignments are all due. (6) If one has a routine to follow, the demands of school can be managed better, including taking tests, completing assignments on time, participating in extra-curricular activities, and managing a part-time job. (7) The more you stay on top of your routine and organization, the more successful you will be at overcoming the demands of school.
