READ: Important Vocabulary Terms

These are the most important vocabulary terms to learn this week. Please make sure you understand these terms.

  • Newton’s second law of motion describes how force and mass affect acceleration. The law states that the acceleration of an object equals the net force acting on the object divided by the object’s mass. This can be represented by the equation: Acceleration = Net force/ Mass or a=F/m

  • Motion is defined as a change in position.

  • Force is defined as a push or pull acting on an object.

  • A Newton (N) is the SI unit for force. A Newton is the force needed to cause a mass of 1 kilogram to accelerate at 1 m/s2, so a Newton equals 1 kg • m/s2.

  • Newton’s third law of motion states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This means that forces always act in pairs.
