STUDY: Chapters 1-2 Vocabulary

As you read through chapters 1-2 this week, keep the following definitions in mind:

  • War of Independence (1775-1782): This refers to a series of wars that helped to end European control of both North and South American. The Revolutionary War, which you learned about this term, was part of this.
  • Spirits (p 7): When mother refuses to "serve spirits," she is referring to alcohol.
  • The condition of African Americans: It is important to recognize that slavery still exists in the time of our novel; however, as we see to be true with Eliza, many African Americans were free, particularly in the North. Check out THIS timeline of African American history to learn more about the events leading up to 1793.
  • disreputable (p 11): shabby, or in bad condition.

After you have completed this part of the lesson, you can check the associated box on the main course page to mark it as complete
