READ: More Capitalization Rules!

Check out these capitalization rules and memorize them for the grammar activity this week!

1. Capitalize days of the week, month of the year, and holidays

Examples: Friday, October, Halloween

2. Do not capitalize seasons, unless they are used as a title.

Examples: We are going to California this summer.

We are going to attend the Spring 2014 olympics.

3. Capitalize countries, nationalities, languages, periods (except century numbers), and events.

Examples: Peru, Japan, French, Spanish, Vicotorian Era, Renaissance, twenty-first century

4. Capitalize the first word in a direct quotation.

Example: Timidly, the student asked, "May we turn in our papers late?"

5. Capitalize the first word after a colon, unless it is a list.

Examples: Bring the following items to school every day: backpack, pencil, and paper.

Joe's late arrival made no difference: He had nothing important to add.
