Pass the Story- Short Story Creative Writing Game
15 Points/ 5 Points per Post
***Make sure you view the intro video this week for instructions on how to participate in this forum***
As you learned in the resource "How to Write a Short Story" there are three parts of a short story- a beginning, middle and an end. In this weeks forum you are going to demonstrate your understand of the parts of a short story by playing a creative writing game called "Pass the Story". You will make three posts. The instructions for each post are described below.
1st post- The beginning (one paragraph at least 5 to 6 well developed, edited and creative sentences)
Click "Add New Discussion" and title it in the subject like "Beginning- Last Name" (example "Beginning- Lyons")
Step 1. Select one writing prompt from the 5 listed below (This will be the first line of your beginning paragraph) :
It was another dark, dreary day in the city. Kelly pulled on a jacket and looked out the window.
There was just enough light in the darkened room for Devin to notice two large orange eyeballs staring right at him!
Kevin felt a cold wet wave rush over his feet. He looked down. The entire floor was covered in water and more was pouring into the room.
Marlene made sure she set all her clocks ahead one ahead before she climbed into bed. She was dreading the time change because…
It was a long way to Philadelphia and, if anyone asked, Jennifer couldn't really explain why she was going there. All she knew was that she HAD to make the trip…
Step 2. Using the prompt you selected from the list above, write the beginning of the story. Remember, you are only writing the beginning and the goal is not to finish the story. Establish a clear tone in the this paragraph.
Step 3. Edit your beginning paragraph for spelling, capitalization and glaring grammatical errors. Click "Add New Discussion". In the subject line write "Beginning- Last Name" (example "Beginning- Daley") and post your beginning paragraph.
2nd post- The middle (one paragraph at least 5 to 6 well developed, edited and creative sentences)
Step 1. Read through your peers' beginning paragraphs. Select one that used a different writing prompt to start their story and identify the tone and events of peer's beginning paragraph. Make sure you select a beginning paragraph that doesn't have a reply from a peer yet.
Step 2: You will now write the middle paragraph for this story. Make sure your paragraph develops the middle of the story, so you should not end the story. Make sure you stay true the author's original intent. NO GAME CHANGERS ALLOWED! Do not change the development of the story by writing something like, "Then he woke and realized it was all a dream."
Step 3. Edit your middle paragraph for spelling, capitalization and glaring grammatical errors. Select "Reply" and at the top of your post write "Middle- Last Name" and then post the middle paragraph.
3rd post- The end (one paragraph at least 5 to 6 well developed, edited and creative sentences)
Step 1: Read through your peers' beginning and middle paragraphs. Select a story that does not have an end yet.
Step 2: Write the ending paragraph. You need to end the story and stay true the author's original tone and development of the story. Again, NO GAME CHANGERS ALLOWED! Do not change the development of the story by writing something like, "Then he woke and realized it was all a dream.".
Step 3. Edit your end paragraph for spelling, capitalization and glaring grammatical errors. Select "Reply" and at the top of your post write "End- Last Name" and then post the ending paragraph.
