READ: Important Vocabulary Terms

These are the most important vocabulary terms to learn this week. Please make sure you understand these terms.

  • Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume.

  • Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in a substance or an object. The basic unit for mass is the kilogram (kg), but smaller masses may be measured in grams (g).

  • Volume is a measure of the amount of space that a substance or an object takes up. The basic unit for volume is the cubic meter (m3), but smaller volumes may be measured in cm3, and liquids may be measured in liters (L) or milliliters (mL).

  • Newton’s first law of motion states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will stay in motion unless it is acted on by an unbalanced force.

  • Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion.

  • Speed is how fast or slow something moves. Speed determines how far something travels in a given amount of time. The SI unit for speed is meters per second (m/s).

  • Velocity is the measure of both speed and direction. Velocity is a vector.

  • A vector is measurement that includes both size and direction.

  • Acceleration is a measure of the change in velocity of a moving object.
