READ: Important Vocabulary Terms

These are the most important vocabulary terms to learn this week. Please make sure you understand these terms.

  • A cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism.

  • Cell theory states that:

    • All organisms are composed of cells.

    • Cells are alive and the basic living units of organization in all organisms.

    • All cells come from other cells.

  • The plasma membrane (also called the cell membrane) is a thin coat of lipids that surrounds a cell.

  • Cytoplasm refers to all of the cellular material inside the plasma membrane, other than the nucleus.

  • Ribosomes are structures in the cytoplasm where proteins are made.

  • DNA is a nucleic acid found in cells. It contains the genetic instructions that cells need to make proteins.

  • tissue is a group of connected cells that have a similar function. There are four types of tissues.

  • An organ is a structure made of two or more tissues that work together.

  • An organ system is a group of organs that work together to carry out a complex overall function. Each organ of the system does part of the larger job.

  • Prokaryotic cells are cells that don’t have a nucleus. Their DNA floats around inside the cell.

  • Eukaryotic cells are cells that have a nucleus. Their DNA is stored in the nucleus. Instead,

  • Prokaryotes are organisms with prokaryotic cells. All prokaryotes are single-celled organisms. Bacteria and Archaea are the only prokaryotes.

  • Eukaryotes are organisms with eukaryotic cells. Animals, plants, fungi, and protists are eukaryotes.

  • Organelles are the different parts of the cell.
