READ: Important Vocabulary Terms

These are the most important vocabulary terms to learn this week. Please make sure you understand these terms.

  • Asexual reproduction is the process of forming a new individual from a single parent.

  • Sexual reproduction is the process of forming a new individual from two parents.

  • Binary fission is a type of asexual reproduction where bacteria grow and divide in half.

  • Fragmentation is a type of asexual reproduction where the whole organism divides in half and then each half regenerates a new organism. One example of this would be flatworms.

  • Parthenogenesis is a type of asexual reproduction that happens when an unfertilized egg cell grows into a new organism.

  • Fertilization is when a sperm and egg fuse together to form a zygote.

  • A zygote is the first cell of a new organism.

  • Gonads are organs that produce eggs or sperm. The male gonads are the testes, and the female gonads are the ovaries. Testes produce sperm; ovaries produce eggs.

  • Gametes are sex cells - either sperm or egg cells.

  • In self-pollination, the egg is fertilized by the pollen of the same flower.

  • In cross-pollination, sperm from the pollen of one flower fertilizes the egg of another flower.
