1. Fractious: I dropped an entire drawer of tea leaves on the floor. The gentlemen were all quarrelsome and fractious. I snuckĀ  uspstairs once, but Mother still slept (64).

Definition: unruly or readily angered.

2. Taut: She did not notice when I entered the room. Her face was pulled taut in pain, and she jerked in her sleep (67).

Definition: tense or strained
